Summer vacation is over. Time to go back to work or school, and time to start visiting doctors. Whether you need a physical for sports or vaccines for the new year, make sure that you add an eye exam to the list of check ups you'll need to schedule.
August is National Eye Exam Month because optometrists know that this is the time of year that people are revamping their style for the new, Fall season. Here are some common questions we get regarding eye exams.
Who should get eye exams?
Everyone! Everyone should get an eye exam every year! Prescriptions normally need to be reviewed every year, anyway, but even if you don't need glasses, and you're over 21, it might be time to get your first eye exam if you have not had one already. For kids, it's important to get them regular eye exams, especially if they have been getting headaches, or have been avoiding reading in class.
What are symptoms of needing glasses?
Symptoms like inability to read words from far away, or confusing "o"s and "c"s when reading are the obvious examples, but there are many others. For example, if you've been getting headaches or migraines after prolonged eye strain (driving long distances, staring at your computer, etc), you might need glasses. It's normal to feel sore after straining your eyes for a long period of time, but it is not normal to consistently get migraines. If you are closing one eye or tilting your head to read a menu or a stop sign, you might need glasses. These are natural reactions by your body to adjust for deteriorating eye sight. For kids, symptoms can include a short attention span or acting out in class.
What happens if I don't get an eye exam?
Well, it's just like not visiting any other doctor that you're supposed to see yearly. Degenerative eye diseases like cataracts and glaucoma can't be caught or treated early if you never go to your eye doctor. Some of these diseases can even be extremely manageable when diagnosed early on. In general, your eyesight can simply continue to deteriorate at a more rapid pace if you do not go to see your optometrist regularly. For kids, acting out will just continue and grades can slip. Neglecting to get your eyes checked every year is what your optometrists is trying to avoid. Worst case scenario, you go get an eye exam and walk away with a stylish new pair of shades, so go do it!
