Caterpillar was founded in 1925 as the result of a merger between the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C.L. Best Tractor Company, but the name ‘Caterpillar’ originated long before the company. In the early part of the 20th Century, Benjamin Holt was looking for a way to improve the traction and mobility of one of his company’s steam tractors. He replaced its wheels with wooden tracks bolted to chains so that the machine would crawl along the ground. Someone remarked to Mr. Holt that the machine reminded them of a caterpillar; he agreed, and the continuous track, or ‘caterpillar’ track was born. The company continues its dedication to innovation and quality craftsmanship as a leading manufacturer of industrial safety equipment, including protective eyewear.
