Designers caught the millennium bug as many
presented their take on Y2K. There was more
metallic silver being flashed on the runways
than at the annual auto show. Oddities abounded.
Hussein Chalayan presented a hard plastic
dress that looked as if it were made from
leftover pieces of an airplane wing. A clear
plastic number by Givenchy had a strategically
located computer circuit pattern. And Alexander
McQueen?s collection featured a dress with
a silver metal-looking bodice that was pure
Xena meets Barbarella.
But while some crooned a space age love song,
futuristic styling was more representative
(in American collections especially) by the
trio of function, style and luxury. For the
usual suspects?Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein
and Donna Karan?that meant clean clothes with
fewer details and simple silhouettes. Sportswear
combined with luxurious fabrics promise to
be the real wave of the future.
Keeping pace with its namesake designer?s
preppy fashion image, Sāfilo Group has expanded
its Ralph Lauren collection with new style
RL686, in the classic understated tradition.
Sāfilo USA recently outfitted actress Alyssa
Milano with a pair of Ralph Lauren 878S sunglasses
while on the set of the WB?s teen-friendly
television series, Charmed.
The expanded Ralph Lauren women?s collection
features three plastic styles and three metal
styles, all with spring hinges. Three of the
metal styles display smaller, fashionable
eye shapes in an elegant stainless steel frame
with a unique twisted temple design. These
are available in a palette of colors ranging
from shiny bronze and silver to dark blue
and aubergine. The trendier, more directional
plastics are available in a range of double
and triple laminate color combinations like
havana/blue, smoke/crystal, blue/crystal/tortoise,
and tortoise/green.
